Greens on the gang patch ban

Gang patchesMetiria Turei has made her opinion clear in a FrogBlog article (”Fashion laws to combat violence“) on Chester Borrows proposed gang patch ban.

Borrows said that a ban on patches and insignia will mean that people walking the street won’t be scared. But looking scary is entirely subjective and shouldn’t be a crime.

The proposed ban will simply turn our cops into real Fashion Police, but wont stop the majority of ‘gang’ violence that happens in our towns.

What I don’t understand is if you do implement this in full force, were do you draw the line. By banning gang colours one leads me to believe that you are forcing people to fit the sociological mould of nz society. Shouldn’t our justice system be able to deal with criminals with out dictating who we can be as individuals? if a man does not sell drugs and brake the law then should it not be his own business what part of society he belongs to (if he chooses to wear “bloods” then it should really be his ‘choice’). Because if we wish to live within a free society then we have to accept the consequences that not everyone will fit and that some people will want to is gang affiliated. Instead shouldn’t we educate people, improve our justice system and hope that gangs will become less, but accept that it is in fact their right in our free society to “choice” to be wearing that gangs sign…

I personally couldn’t look upon any kind of patch in this nation without identifying the evil this so-called ‘form of free expression’ carries with it.

Israel is a democracy (believe it or not). Would my freedom of expression be protected if I chose with wear a t-shirt with a swastika through the orthodox area of Jerusalem? Try and draw an allegory with our own nation - these patches identify a very similar kind of evil. That these men are child-killers and rapists. That these men actually don’t possess any kind of honor or mana.

It isn’t so much an issue of fashion. Rather, objectionable material as defined by the Dept of Internal affairs. A gang patch, visually, is as morally objectionable as the kind of pornograpy that sends a person to prison…

It’s not about fashion at all.

    David.
